100-megapixel medium format
The camera is the starting point. I shoot on 100MP medium format with ultra-wide lenses, which is what lets a photograph hold a whole elevation with the detail still intact, and lets me deliver several usable frames — a vertical, a horizontal, a square — cropped out of one capture rather than reshooting for each. Resolution is not a gimmick here: it is what a practice needs when the same image has to work as a full-bleed page and a thumbnail both.
Predicting when the light is worth shooting
A building only looks its best under particular light, and that light is available for a narrow window on a limited number of days. Most architectural photography is scheduled around a diary: a shoot booked for a Tuesday happens on that Tuesday, whatever the sky is doing.
I approached that differently. I wrote software that forecasts when conditions will be best for architectural photography, scoring the days ahead rather than guessing — so a shoot is booked for a morning the building is actually going to look right, not merely for a morning someone was free. The practical effect is fewer wasted visits and better photographs.
Technique, briefly
Most of the craft is in the capture, not in stacking exposures. Where a scene’s range genuinely exceeds a single frame I will still reach for exposure blending or HDR, but those are occasional tools now rather than the method. Where the ground offers no useful vantage point, I am FAA-licensed and insured to photograph from the air.
Travel
Most of what I photograph is within about two hours of Richmond, and that is where the scheduling advantage above matters most — I can wait for the right morning. Beyond that I work across Virginia, and I travel further still: I have shot for clients as far away as Idaho. If your practice has work in several places and would rather brief one photographer than find a new one in each, ask.
