This building’s whole character comes from its neighbors. It’s a slim modern infill — gray metal panel and brick over a tall glass storefront — dropped into a block of much older Broad Street facades, a tan-brick Italianate on one side and a red brick building with a starred cornice on the other, with the faceted silver form of the Institute for Contemporary Art just up the street. The photograph has to hold all of that at once: the new insertion and the historic street it joins.
At golden hour I shot it with a long exposure so the traffic in the red bus lanes streaks past as ribbons of light while the buildings stay sharp — the moving city framing the still one. I came back at blue hour for a straight-on, one-point elevation with the interiors lit warm behind the glass and the geometric floor visible inside. And I put the drone up for the block from above, the red transit lanes cutting down the frame toward the downtown skyline in the winter haze.
It was early January, the trees bare, the light thin and long — good conditions for showing how a single new building takes its cues from an old block.
