A children’s hospital is allowed to be joyful, and this one is — a glass tower in blue and teal with slabs of orange, a bright green lightwell punched into the corner, and little ticks of red, lime, and cyan scattered up the walls like confetti. My job was to photograph that color at full strength without letting the glass go flat or the accents go garish.
December gave me a low, hard sun that broke into a starburst off the curtain wall, which I used on purpose — stop the lens down and the flare becomes part of the composition rather than a flaw. I also shot the building straight up the corner as an abstract: gold soffit, silver panel, and those colored bars against a darkening blue sky, the architecture reduced to pure color-field.
It sits shoulder to shoulder with older downtown neighbors — I framed a few looking across from Old City Hall — and a glass pedestrian bridge crosses the street to the clinic opposite, which draws a clean graphic line of its own. Bright sky against reflective glass is a wide range, so I bracketed and blended to keep both the saturated panels and the sky. This was the last of three downtown buildings I photographed that same December day.
