The low spring sun was still climbing when I put the drone up over this new C&F branch in Sandston, and the flat white roof and pale gray brick almost disappeared against the fresh asphalt and the wall of trees behind it. What I wanted from the air was the whole footprint at once — the long window line, the young landscaping, the parking lot still bright and unworn.
Inside is where the building gets its personality. The community room runs the James River on printed window film — the arches of the old railroad bridge, Main Street Station lit gold — so the light coming through the glass carries the city with it. A floating wood-slat ceiling drops over the seating and warms up the exposed, dark-painted structure overhead. Down the hall the break room does the opposite: white acoustic tile, orange chairs, and a green-painted bar-joist ceiling left honest and open to the woods outside.
The hard part of a branch like this is that the exterior reads corporate and the interiors read playful, and both have to feel like the same place. I shot the outside for order and the inside for warmth.
