The best room in this renovation is a corridor. A barrel-vaulted ceiling with a curved wood reveal runs its length, hung with heavy brass lanterns, and both walls are covered floor-to-rail in black-and-white photographs of Virginia’s highways being built — interstates cut through mountains, toll roads opening, the whole history of getting around the state. Standing at one end and looking down the vault, the lanterns march off to a vanishing point. That’s the frame the building wants, so I gave it the center of the axis and let the symmetry carry it.
The rest is the quieter side of a renovation: an older downtown building brought up to date behind its original divided-light windows. A break room gets a big circular ring light over a teal wall and a gray tile backsplash; a glass-walled huddle room glows acid green with blue stools. Warm lanterns against a cooler daylit ceiling is a wide range to hold, so I bracketed and blended the exposures to keep the historic photographs readable without dimming the fixtures.
The interesting problem here was respecting the old bones while photographing the new work honestly.
