This one is a small structure with a big idea. A juice bar named for bees put a parklet on the street built entirely from cedar in a honeycomb pattern — stacked hexagons, some solid, some opened up and strung across with yellow cord in a tight geometric web. Built-in benches and a little table tuck into the cells. In late-afternoon August light the wood glows and the string lattice lights up like filament.
The photograph I was after needed the street to be part of it. So I slowed the shutter down and waited for a bus to come through: it drags across the background as a streak of red and silver while the honeycomb stays razor-sharp in the foreground. That contrast — a still, handmade thing against the blur of the city moving past it — is the whole story of a streetside seat, and a long exposure is the only way to say it in one frame.
Up close I shot the string work on its own, the yellow lattice inside a hexagon against the shaded cedar, because the craft deserves a detail.
