The radiation oncology expansion at St. Mary’s puts a night sky over its patients. In the CT room, fiber-optic stars spread across a dark ceiling, ringed by a warm cove of light, above a mural of still water at dusk.

The linear accelerator room goes further: its ceiling changes color. A photograph can only hold one moment of it, so here it is moving.

Every one of those stars was set by hand. One installer from Lighting Virginia spent six weeks placing each fiber individually to make the night sky in these rooms.

Outside the treatment rooms the waiting room is bright and calm, with blue seating, framed landscapes and lit panels overhead.

Registration sits under a curved wood ceiling, the desk set against a deep blue wall.
